Apple Streusel
Ingredients
For the crust and streusel topping
2 cups flour
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
2 sticks butter, cold and cubed
1 egg, beaten
For the filling
6 cups apple diced
½ cup sugar
¼ cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
Steps
To make the crust and streusel topping, combine 2 cups of flour, ½ cup of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon on cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg in a bowl
Use a pastry cutter to cut in 2 sticks of cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs
Stir in 1 beaten egg to the mixture
Line a 9 inch by 13 inch baking dish with some parchment paper
Pour about ⅔ of the crust mixture into the prepared baking dish and use the back of a spoon or a flat bottomed cup to press down on the crust until it is even and smooth and covers the entire bottom of the pan
Reserve the remaining ⅓ of the crust mixture for later
Take 6 to 8 apples, wash, peel, core, slice, and dice the apples into ½ inch pieces so you have about 6 cups of diced apples and place the apples in a large bowl
Add ½ cup of sugar, ¼ cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg to the apples and stir until all the apples are evenly coated
Pour the apple filling on top of the flattened bottom crust and spread smooth
Take the reserved streusel crumb mixture and squeeze small handfuls in your hands to encourage large lumps and sprinkle the crumbs all over the top of the apple filling
Bake the apple streusel in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 45 minutes
Remove the apple streusel from the oven and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving
