Homemade Vanilla Extract

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces 80 proof vodka

  • 3 to 5 vanilla beans


You Will Also Need

  • A glass jar, with a tight fitting lid

  • Sharp knife


Steps

  1. Cut the vanilla beans in half lengthwise, splitting them apart

  2. Depending on the height of your jar, you may need to cut the beans in half again to make them short enough to fit in jar

  3. Place cut beans in glass jar and cover them with vodka

  4. Make sure beans are completely submerged, push down any that aren’t

  5. Store in a cool, dark place

  6. Allow the extract to develop for at least 2 months before using it

  7. Periodically shake the vanilla extract every couple of weeks to allow the vanilla flavor to distribute
